Mama June Weight Loss Strategy from Size 24 to Size 4

Mama June weight loss story- Many of us follow celebrities, they are our role models and inspiration. Be it the way they dress, their hairstyle and sometimes even their workout plan. We just think that they are perfect. The truth is, they are not perfect, but they try their best to lead a normal and healthy life. They are also human beings and struggle with problems like weight gain just like us.

Recently, Mama June lost 300-pound weight in 2017, on her show From Not To Hot and made everyone awestruck. She is a 38-year-old Hollywood reality star, who decided to give herself a healthy living. Losing weight made her an inspiration for many overweight women. So, let us understand what was her overall weight loss strategy-

Who is Mama June?


Born on August 10, 1979, Mama June’s actual name is June Shannon. She grew up in Georgia and is a mother of 4 children. June Shannon’s family has got their own Tv show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. She was also very famous for her weight, as she weighs around 460 pounds.

Mama June 300 Pounds Weight Loss Journey

Mama June’s weight loss journey didn’t happen overnight. There were lots of struggles and sacrifices to meet this deadline.

The year 2015: In November 2015, Mama June told that walking helps to lose weight. She thinks walking three to five miles a day, made her lose weight. “Once you get started with the kids you don’t think about it,” she said. “You’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!’”

The year 2016: Mama June underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2016, which made her come to size 4 from 460 pounds. She underwent bariatric surgery, in 2016 and lost more than 300 pounds. Dieting and personal trainer, Kenya Crooks also helped her in the weight loss.

The year 2017: Just going for a surgery and getting all the fats removed, was not the end of her weight loss journey. She was still attracted to rich, calorie food- and in absence of that, she used to vomit in agony. She confessed:-

“I’m joining a small weight-loss support group. Although I got rid of all my junk food, it would be great to get some help to keep the weight off long-term. I mean, I’m really nervous about walking into a room of people I don’t know and talking about my overeating. I’m scared, but I’ve got to do something.”

The year 2018: Mama June again gained weight. This time she switched to the Keto diet. Keto diet is also known as high proteins & fats and fewer carbohydrates diet is one of the best diets for weight loss. In the absence of carbs, the keto diet forces the body to use the fat for body fuel.

“I’ve tried the keto diet – It’s like, cheese, eggs, protein, meat. And you honestly lose weight with that so it’s not that bad.” June said in a BUILD Series interview in the summer of 2018.

But in May 2018, when Mama June was back for her show From Not to Hot, she was seen struggling for her weight after she gained 25 pounds from her last lowest weight.

I’m not here to tell people how to diet, because everyone’s different, but I know what has worked for me. I think people just don’t need to give up, and I think that’s what happens with a lot of diets nowadays. I’ve done that.”

She added that her focus now had to be on regaining the vision she’d lost in both eyes, explaining: “I can lose the weight, I know that. And I know I don’t want to go back over 200lb. I’m paying more attention to it.”

Just being on keto diet was not everything, as Mama June loves to eat, so being on track and to control ourselves was the biggest challenge for her. Thanks to her daughter Pumpkin, who always keep an eye on her “I’m up late at night most of the time, but I tell her like, ‘Momma, you can’t do that,’” Pumpkin, her daughter told Entertainment Tonight.

“I have to show her [previous] pictures of herself sometimes, and she’s like, ‘I can’t even believe that’s me.’ I’m like, ‘If you don’t stop eating that junk, you’re going to go right back!’”

How she maintains her weight?

After she underwent surgery and keto diet, she lost her weight but the next big challenge was to keep the weight maintained. Here are the following ways in which Mama June tried to maintain her weight-

  • Walking-

Before Mama June agreed that walking helps to lose weight. She agrees that walking 3-5 miles a day has helped her a lot in losing weight. She also says that she tries to keep her busy, which is the main thing, as it distracts her from eating.

“Honestly, when I first started losing weight, it was just being more active, being busy with the show and doing more things with Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

  • Healthy Diet-

It was very necessary for June to have a healthy diet. Her diet planner told, that she did not take away all the carbs from June’s diet. This would baffle her up, so she told her to eat carbs early in the day and reduce her fat intake later in the day. Mama June consumed healthy fats like avocado and almond butter, hummus, celery, and slow-digesting foods like brown rice, lentils, sweet potatoes, and beans.

June was a soda lover, so her dietician suggested consuming fruit-infused water

“For people who don’t like to drink water by itself, what we’ve done is we’ve thrown some strawberries and kiwi in there,” Dietician says. “It’s really good, and it helps you get it down a whole lot faster.”

  • Tea and Coffee-

Tea and Coffee are energy booster and also suppress appetite, they contain only 0-3 calories (without sugar and cream) which are good for the people trying to lose weight.

  •  Keto Diet-

The last thing which Mama June tried to lose her weight was the Keto diet. Ketogenic diet helped her to stay slim and fit. Mama June followed a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb diet – which means a lot of chicken, eggs, cheese, and avocado, pasta, and certain veggies.


  • Large Breakfast-

This is one of the main points which we have always heard, never skip breakfast. Having a good and large breakfast is very important for keeping the weight off and preventing any king of overeating and junk food.

  •  Exercise-

Mama June first started with only walking, then she went for the surgery. Now, after she has recovered from surgery, she is ready to take some high-intensity cardio workout to make the body toned.


  • Weight Loss Supplements-

Apart from surgery, walking and diet Mama June also relied on some weight loss supplements like Apple Cider Vinegar. They help to suppress the appetite and also aids in weight loss.

Mama June has been so proud of her weight loss journey, and she shows it off proudly. She keeps posting her pics on social media these days,  “I’ve worked my ass off working out, getting healthy,” Mama June said during her show’s finale. “And now I feel like becoming the person on the outside that I always felt like on the inside.”

So losing weight is not an impossible task, all you need is determination and will power to overcome all your food cravings. Nothing is impossible girls if Mama June can do it so can you. So start today and set a target for yourself.
