The first and important step in Korean skincare routine is to cleanse. A proper cleansing of the skin is the start of every skincare routine. In Korean skincare, there are three ways to cleanse your skin.
Oil cleansers are considered as the base of Korean skincare routine. They believe in double cleansing of your skin. Oil based cleanser not only remove impurities from the skin, but also remove other oils like sebum and helps to dissolve any other dirt.
Oil cleansers are hydrating in nature and help cleanse the pores.
Application: Take a small amount of oil cleanser and massage it in circular motion. Use little water to help the oil cleanser. Wash it off with lukewarm water.
Next cleanser which you use to keep your skin super clean is water based cleanser. Yes, Koreans believe in double cleansing your skin. After oil based cleanser, you follow it up with water based cleanser.
Water-based cleanser is in a gel or foam texture. It deeply cleanses your skin and maintains the pH balance of the skin.
Application: Take the cleanser and gently massage it in your skin. It will take time to lather. Later, wash it off with lukewarm water.
An exfoliator helps in cleaning the pores and getting rid of any dead skin cells. No matter you use a chemical, physical or even a homemade scrub. Exfoliation is necessary, it removes the dull skin, cleanse up the skin pores and gives you a natural glow.
Chemical exfoliants like BHA’s and AHA’s and physical exfoliants like brown sugar, coffee and walnut shell. They both help to make your skin soft and smooth.
Application: Wet your face, take the scrub, and gently message it on your face. Do not overdo it, it you have got sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Your face is fully cleaned now; you need to prep it.
Hydrated skin goes a long way, and nothing is better than having a good toner or mist to hydrate the skin. Toner helps prep your skin for any moisturizer you are going to use later. Using a Korean toner will give you a heads up; they are rich in antioxidants and soothe the skin.
Application: You can either use cotton to apply the toner or directly apply it with your hand. If you prefer using a mist, spray it 20 cm away from your face.
Now, your skin is prepared to be nourished. Nourishing the skin is another 4-step process.
Not many people know about essence. Essence is a water-based skin treatment that is light in weight and very moisturizing. They protect the skin and give it an anti-aging treatment too. It keeps the skin hydrated and healthy.
You can apply essence both in the morning and evening, making it perfect to use after toner.
Application: Cleanse and tone your skin, then apply essence to your damp skin.
Serum is a skincare product that works on dark circles, fine lines, acne, and pigmentation. It is concentrated in form with active ingredients. You can also use ampoules to address all your skin issues. The ingredients, like peptides and retinoid, help stimulate collagen production and make your skin more firm and resilient.
Application: Both serums and ampoules are meant to be applied after your skin is fully cleaned. Gently pat the serum to improve product absorption.
Also known as face mask! This is the step that many of us want so badly. Using a sheet mask means pampering your skin, relaxing yourself, and enjoying some me time. Sheet masks are hydrating and help to moisturize your skin. It also removes clogged pores and dead skin cells.
Application: Choose the sheet mask that is perfect for your skin. Open it and apply it on your face. Leave it for 10 minutes, remove the mask and wash it off with lukewarm water.
Not many of us considers this, but the skin around the eye is very delicate and sensitive. As you age, they will be the first one to show off your age by fine line, crow’s feet and what not. Using a good eye cream, helps to moisturize the delicate skin around the eye and nourishes it.
Application: Take a desired amount of eye cream and tap it around your eyes. Gently massage the cream into your skin for better absorption.
Applying a good moisturizer can make all the difference in your skin. Moisturizer apart from hydrating your skin, protect it from free radicals. In Korean skincare, moisturizer is the most important step in the skincare routine.
If you have dry skin, try oil based moisturizer it will absorb quickly and will keep skin hydrated for long time. Oily or acne prone skin have gel type moisturizer.
Application: After you have cleaned your face and dried it, it is time to apply moisturizer.
The last and most important step in Korean skincare is protecting it from sun. Sun’s harmful UV rays, penetrate in the skin and destroy collagen. UV rays make our skin age faster. Therefore, it is necessary to always use sunscreen even when you don’t see the sun outside.
Application: Applying sunscreen is the last step in a skincare routine. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before stepping out in the sun. Also, apply sunscreen every two hours, to keep your skin protected from the harmful UV rays.
