Types of Hair Damage

  • Dull and Dry Hair- This is the most common type of hair damage. Hair becomes dull and dry, when it is deprived of nutrition like protein and natural oil. When natural oil gets rip out of your upper layer of hair, it becomes dull and loses its shine.
  • Tangles- Damaged hair is prone to tangles. The damaged cuticles create friction between hair strands and cause them to interwined. There are many detangling sprays; oils and conditioner which can help you deal with the situation.
  • Frizz- The common hair problem which curly hair people can easily relate to. When the hair cuticles do not lie flat, it causes frizz in hair. Frizziness appears at the crown level. Humidity and damaged hair increases the chances of frizz.
  • Hair Breakage- Hair breakage or split ends occur when there are two ends of hair. This leads to brittleness in hair.

Home Remedies to Treat Dry and Damaged Hair

1. Massage with Butter-

You might find this strange, but this is actually very effective. Butter is filled with moisturizer; it has high content of fatty acids and helps to add moisture in the hair. Fatty acids help to increase the shine of the hair and also remove frizzy hair.

How to use:

  • Take unsalted butter in a bowl
  • Melt the butter by warming it
  • Massage your scalp and hair with butter
  • Cover your hair with a shower cap for half an hour
  • Shampoo your hair with lukewarm water.  

2. Using Hair oils-

It is very necessary to use hot oil massage to repair the damaged hair and to provide nourishment to dry hair. Massaging your scalp and hair with oils like-

  • Olive oil
  • Almond oil
  • Castor oil

Helps to provide nourishment to hair and also makes them soft and smooth.

3. Yogurt and Oil Hair Mask-

The best combination to treat dry and damaged hair is this amazing hair pack. Yoghurt and oil help to keep the hair cuticles soft and smooth and also repair the damaged hair. Yoghurt helps to keep the scalp clean and oil penetrates deep into the scalp and makes hair healthy from within.

Hair Mask:

  • Take half a cup of yoghurt
  • Add 2 tbsp. of olive oil and few drops of essential oil
  • Mix the ingredients properly and make a hair mask
  • Apply the hair mask on your scalp and hair
  • Cover your hair for 15-20 minutes
  • Wash it off with mild shampoo and lukewarm water.

4. Fenugreek Hair Mask-

Fenugreek is very healthy and nutritious for hair. It helps to replenish the hair and provide smoothness and softness to hair. Fenugreek is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties; it helps to remove dandruff, scalp irritation and also acne.

Hair Mask:

  • Soak some of the fenugreek in the water
  • Let it be soaked for 3-4 days until the water becomes sticky
  • Extract the water and add castor oil in
  • Apply the fenugreek water on your scalp and hair
  • Let it stay for one hour
  • Wash off the fenugreek water with a mild shampoo.
  • You can make the paste of soaked fenugreek
  • Grind it in the grinder and make a thin paste
  • Apply the fenugreek paste on your hair and scalp
  • Let it stay for 30-40 minutes
  • Wash it off with lukewarm water.

5. Banana Hair Mask-

Bananas are very nutritious and rich in silica, which helps to make hair stronger and thicker. It also contains antimicrobial properties, which helps to treat dry and flaky scalp and also reduces dandruff. The banana hair mask is the best hair mask to get rid of frizzy hair and to make hair soft and smooth.

Hair Mask:

  • Take one ripe banana
  • Peel it off and grind it in grinder to make a smooth paste
  • Add 1 tbsp. of oil in it
  • Mix both the ingredients and make a smooth paste
  • Apply the banana paste on your scalp and hair
  • Let it stay for one hour
  • Wash off the banana mask with lukewarm water and mild shampoo.

6. Add Egg to your Shampoo-

The egg is rich in protein and hair is made up of protein. Adding egg to your shampoo helps to increase the protein content in hair and makes them healthy and nourished.

Hair Mask:

  • Take one egg, break it and add it in your shampoo
  • Apply the shampoo as you use it
  • Let the shampoo stay for 5-6 minutes
  • Wash it off with cold water.

7. Increase the intake of Omega-3s and Antioxidants-

Having a healthy and nutritious diet is very important to keep your hair healthy, nourished and soft. Omega-3s and Antioxidants are two nutrients which help to keep hair healthy and remove any split ends. Following are the food items which are loaded with Omega-3s and Antioxidants.

  • Eating Salmon, Tuna, Oyesters and Sardines will provide you Omega-3s
  • Walnut, Broccoli, Tomatoes, Blueberries and Kidney beans are rich in Antioxidants.

8. Hair Serum-

Many of us don’t understand the importance of Hair Serum. Hair serum helps to lock the moisture in the hair, it protects hair from styling tools, reduces frizz in hair and adds shine in it. It makes hair soft, smooth and healthy. Apply hair serum on your hair and ends.

9. Rinse with Tea-

Just the way tea awakens us; it also helps to awaken the hair cuticles. Tea enhances out our hair colour and provides nourishment to them. It helps to provide shine to hair and keeps them healthy.

How to use:

  • Take a tea bag
  • Put the tea bag in the warm water
  • Let it brew for few minutes
  • Take out the tea bag, strain out the tea
  • You can use that tea to final rinse your hair after shampoo.

10. ACV Hair Mask-

We all know how amazing ACV or Apple cider vinegar is for our hair. It balances the pH level of our hair and strengthens it. ACV helps to provide shine and lustre to hair and keep away the infections and itchiness of the scalp. Using ACV hair mask helps to remove frizziness and also improves the texture of the hair.

How to use:

  • Take 1 tbsp. of ACV
  • Mix 2 tbsp. of Olive oil
  • And 3 egg whites in it
  • Mix the ingredients in a bowl
  • Apply the mask on your hair and let it stay for half hour
  • Wash it off with mild shampoo and cold water.

11. Use a Humidifier-

If you are living in very cold weather, using a humidifier is a must for you. Humidifier adds moisture to the hair; it treats the dryness of hair and keeps it soft, smooth and healthy.

Causes of Hair Damage

  • Using too much of Heat Styling Products. We all like to style our hair, using too much of heat styling products damage the hair cuticles and make hair rough.
  • Many of us like to colour our hair. If we go from dark to light hair, we damage the bleach. Bleach damages the natural colour of our hair. Bleaching can make hair dry, brittle and fragile.
  • Not applying oil in hair. Oil helps to provide nourishment to hair and keep them healthy
